USSL Seeks Court Order To Stop Azam TV’s Broadcast of League Matches
The Uganda Super League Limited (USLL) has applied to the Commercial Court to halt live broadcast of the Uganda Premier League matches by new sponsors Azam TV.
Decolas Kiiza, the head of Finance at Fufa disclosed that they received a letter from the Commercial Court asking them to appear on Thursday at 2.30pm.
The latest development comes after the Uganda FA terminated a running contract with SuperSport and on Monday and signed a US$1.9 million contract with Tanzania based Azam TV for a three and a half period.
USLL who sold the League broadcasting rights to South African based SuperSport have reportedly asked court to stop the broadcast till the main matter is heard on March 3rd.
On Tuesday the Minister of State for Sports, Charles Bakkabulindi asked the Uganda FA to terminate the League contract they signed with Azam TV claiming the one signed with SuperSport still stands.
The Minister reasoned that the Memorandum of Understanding that the FA and the Uganda Super League Limited (USLL) signed on behalf of SuperSport was legally binding at the time, then it should be sustained in the broader interest of promoting the game of football in Uganda.
However, the FA yesterday maintained that they have never signed any contract with Super sport in regard to the sponsorship of the country’s Elite League.
Alex Luganda, the FA’s legal person said USLL did not fulfill their obligation of paying FUFA and the Clubs and therefore terminating the contract was the only alternative.
But Luganda warned that although it’s not their style to go to the courts of law to solve football matters, they will be ready for legal action if USLL decides to handle matters that way.
The second round of the League is slated to start February 17th and Azam TV was already planning to broadcast live matches.
