Woman Arrested For Stealing A Baby From Masaka Hospital


Police in Masaka are holding a 33 year old woman for trying to steal a newborn baby from Masaka Regional Referral hospital.
Prossy Namugera tried to steal Christine Nakintu’s baby.
Namugera, a resident of Kayirikiti Zone in Nyendo Ssenyange Division in Masaka District was apprehended after the attempted theft.
Nakintu, a resident of Kyangwe Village in Kinoni town council in Lwengo district, was resting on her bed in the hospital when Namugera approached the bed to steal the toddler.
Josephine Nakanwaji, Nakintu’s mother, says that she had briefly left the ward when she heard an alarm that Namugera had stolen their baby.
However, drama ensured when the attendants tried to apprehend Namugera and she started acting like a lunatic and stripped naked. This is did not stop her arrest by hospital police officers.
During interrogation, Namugera claimed she had been asked by an aunt called Resty Namulema to steal for her a baby. Namulema is reportedly married to a soldier at Kasijagirwa Armoured brigade barracks at Kasijagirwa.
She said her aunt told her that a baby would save her marriage since she is barren.
Masaka Regional Referral hospital Administrator Dr. Elieza Mugisha says that this is the second arrest at the hospital of someone trying to steal a baby from the general maternity ward.
He says the hospital is going to tighten security at the hospital to curb the trend.
The Southern Region Police Spokesperson Noah Sserunjoji has confirmed the incident saying that Namugera is likely to face charges of stealing a baby when police investigations into the matter are completed.
He has however asked attendants to always be vigilant while at the hospital to avoid losing their property and babies to thieves as the hospital plan to raise security at the wards.
The incident comes at a time when Masaka Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Linos Ngopek has instructed police to investigate allegations of drug theft at the hospital by medical workers.
