Mehdi Abid Charef of Algeria will officiate second round first leg of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier between Mauritania ad Uganda Cranes on Sunday at the Stade Olympique de Nouakchott.
Countrymen Mahmoud Mounir Bitam and Hamza Hammou will be his assistants on the day, while compatriot Mokhatar Amalou will keep an eye as the fourth official. Sinko Zeli (Cote D’Ivoire) is the math commissioner.
The 32-year-old works as a state engineer in Algiers, and has been a FIFA referee since 2011. He was the man in the middle of an ill-fated 2013 CAF Under-20 Championship final between Ghana and Egypt.
At the same tournament, Charef was also in charge of the Gabon vs DR Congo Group B match which ended 0-0 before overseeing Cote D’Ivoire’s 4-2 humiliation of Tanzania in Dar es Salaam on 16th June 2013.
Meanwhile, Cranes fly out to Mauritania via South Africa Thursday, where they will be joined by first choice goalkeeper Dennis Onyango and lead striker Geoffrey Massa in Johannesburg. Tonny Mawejje, who missed the first leg in Kampala due to club commitments, is also expected to join the contingent of 30 in Johannesburg, South Africa together with midfielders Luwaga Kizito and Moses Oloya.
Uganda carry a 2-0 advantage courtesy of second half goals by substitute Brian Majwega and lead striker Geoffrey Massa will progress to the group stage of qualification if they avoid defeat or lose by a marginal goal in Nouakchott on Sunday. Ghana, Togo and Guinea await the winners of these two legs in Group E.
