I Won’t Return To Court – Besigye

Former FDC presidential candidate Col. Dr. Kizza Besigye has vowed not to return to Nakawa magistrates’ court until investigations are complete.

“Already seated in Nakawa court waiting for the Magistrate. It’s a last time to appear in this court if investigations in treason case continue,” Besigye tweeted.

Besigye was today morning reporting to court over treason charges which he allegedly committed when he sworn himself in as a president and even formed the cabinet yet he had not won an election.

Besigye told court Magistrate that he will not return until investigations into the matter are complete.

He was granted bail in July last year by High court which ordered him to report twice a month.

The order was later revised by the deputy registrar Mary Khainza in November 2016 who ordered him to start reporting once a month to reduce financial expenses.

Almost a year now, the Directorate of Public Prosecution contends that it’s still carrying out investigations and once they are done, the trial will begin.

Prosecution alleges that Besigye and others still at large on February 20 and May 11, 2016, planned to forcefully ascend to the office of the President.

According to the charge sheet, Besigye on April 7, while at Kasangati, uttered words to the effect that he would establish a Cabinet for Uganda.

Other accusations against him are that he unlawfully declared himself winner of the 2016 presidential elections, he defied lawful orders and mobilized people to attend his swearing in and that he unlawfully took the presidential oath, undertaking to execute the functions and duties of the office of the President.
