Uganda Cranes midfield warrior Tony Mawejje who delivered a hammer blow to Angola’s World Cup dream is desperate to fulfil his Europa League ambitions with a move to Norwegian football club FK Haugesund

mawejjeThe midfielder has been linked with a January move to Haugesund Stadion after the right-sided Íþróttabandalag Vestmannaeyja anchorman, who has enjoyed a rich vein of form having helped Uganda to two World Cup qualifying games in which he scored in the 1-0 and 2-1 victories over Liberia and Angola respectively thereafter continued his scoring form by grabbing another goal for his club a week later, is eager to make the switch once the transfer window opens.

And when the news broke on Monday night, RedPepper Online edition contacted the star who immediately confirmed the proposed move.

Talks on a new contract at IBV began at the close of the season in October, but there has been little progress though Mawejje has been guaranteed a place in the Icelandic top league team where he has played more than 100 matches since 2009.

Mawejje said: ‘ Haugesund play regularly in Europe and, for all players, that is a bonus. I’ve never played much Europa League football that much and that is obviously something I dream about doing.

‘Haugesund are a big club, a big name in the Norway. They have a good reputation; a big and famous support and they always compete very well.’

Mawejje’s move to conduct training sessions in Norway was initiated by his agent, a close associate of FK Haugesund.

“If all goes well and he impresses the technical staff here, we shall sign him in preparation for the upcoming season “, a club statement says.

‘I have a fierce competitive instinct and want to play football every week,’ Mawejje said. ‘I believe I should be playing at the top level.’

Mawejje also believes his self-belief is strongly the driving force. “It is down to ‘being confident and having self-belief that this is my time now,” he said.
