Mulago is operating the cancer machine illegally — Atomic Agency Council
Officials from the Atomic Agency council have told parliament Natural Resource Committee that Mulago hospital is operating the cancer radiotherapy machine without license.
The Atomic Energy Council is under the ministry of Energy and Mineral Development.
It is responsible for issuing, authorising and grant exemption for the possession, use of radiation sources and conducting inspections to assess radiation safety and security conditions in compliance with law.
The council officials while appearing before the committee to present its budget for the 2016/17 financial year said they can’t grant Mulago a new license before the hospital addresses safety issues raised.
“Mulago is operating the cancer machine illegally. The licence expired. Its Ugx 800,000 per year,” Parliament Watch quoted one of the council officials.
“We could not give Mulago a new licence without addressing the safety measures we raised.”
The official noted that Radiation workers in Mulago are not being monitored yet they are being exposed.
“We visited Mulago in 2013 and we found out that the cancer machine was not in good conditions…We found out that the cancer machine in Mulago used to get stack. It had to be operated manually,” the official added.
In the recent days, media was awash with stories of the radiotherapy machine breakdown.
