Uganda Starts Medal Quest On Day One Of Commonwealth Games


Uganda will look to set the pace for adding to its gold medal reserves at the 20th Commonwealth games in Glasgow, when swimmers Jamila Lunkunse, Arnold Kisulo and Joshua Ekirikubinza compete in Heat 3 of the 50m breaststroke, men’s 50m butterfly Heat 2 and 100m backstroke (Heat 1) respectively today, Thursday 24th .
In badminton, All Africa silver medalist Edwin Ekiring and Ugandan star Wilson Tukire must lead Uganda in the mixed team event fixtures. Uganda have been drawn in Group B alongside neighbours Kenya, India and Ghana.
Queen Elizabeth II officially opened the 20th Commonwealth Games at Celtic Park on Wednesday after a moving and colourful ceremony in front of a 40,000 capacity crowd.
The Games will feature 17 sports across 11 days of competition with more than 4,500 athletes from 71 nations competing, making the event the biggest Scotland has ever hosted.
Uganda’s squash players Ian Rukunya and Michael Kawooya will also be in action today.
Uganda is represented by 62 athletes.
